Dua Before Eating

Eating is a daily necessity, but in Islam, even simple acts like eating can become an act of worship when done according to the Sunnah. One of the most important Islamic etiquettes of eating is reciting the dua before eating. This small but powerful supplication brings barakah (blessings) into our food and keeps Shaytan away from sharing our meal.

Arabic Supplication Before Eating

Arabic:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى بَرَكَةِ اللَّهِ

Transliteration:
Bismillāhi wa ‘alā barakatillāh.

Translation:
In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah.

Importance of Saying Dua Before Eating

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly encouraged Muslims to remember Allah before beginning a meal. Mentioning Allah’s name reminds us that all sustenance comes from Him alone.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When one of you eats, he should mention the name of Allah.”
(Abu Dawood)

If a person forgets to say Bismillah at the start, Islam teaches mercy and flexibility by allowing them to say it during the meal.

Benefits of Reciting Dua Before Eating

  • Invites Barakah: Food becomes more satisfying and beneficial
  • Protection from Shaytan: Shaytan cannot eat when Allah’s name is mentioned
  • Gratitude to Allah: Builds thankfulness for His blessings
  • Following Sunnah: Earns reward for practicing the Prophet’s ﷺ way
